FAO/WHO Food Safety Risk Analysis Manual

Between 2001 and 2004, ILSI collaborated with FAO and WHO on the development of the Food Safety Risk Analysis Manual, which presents a framework and principles to structure and guide the application of risk analysis rather than a prescriptive formula to implement risk analysis.

Project Objectives

  • To provide essential background information and guidance for regulators and other officials responsible for managing and/or supervising risk analysis in practice.
  • To improve food safety regulators’ understanding and use of risk analysis as the basic framework for a modern food safety system.

The manual is the first part of a three-part set, which includes:

  • Part I:Food Safety Risk Analysis – An Overview and Framework Manual.
  • Part II:Food Safety Risk Analysis Case Studies.
  • Part III:Resources for Building Capacity in Food Safety Risk Analysis (CD-ROM).

A “test run” of the Manual took place at a workshop organized in conjunction with the 4th Asian Food Safety/Nutrition Conference, March 2004, Bali, Indonesia.  Participants included regulators from developing countries who provided input on the value of this manual as a teaching tool and made recommendations on how to improve it.

Impact
After it is published (anticipated in early 2006), the manual will provide guidance to several Codex committees relative to risk analysis, ensuring that the same risk analysis methods are used across the world.  It will also provide guidance to regulators and other officials in developed and developing countries responsible for managing and/or supervising risk analysis in practice.
