Workhop on "Micronutrient Bioavailability: Priorities and Challenges for Setting Dietary Reference Values
Barcelona, Spain 11/06/2009 - 12/06/2009

SUMMARY REPORT

The ILSI Europe Addition of Nutrients to Foods Task Force and the EURRECA Network of Excellence jointly organised a workshop on micronutrient bioavailability. It took place in Barcelona, Spain, in the afternoon of Thursday 11 June and on Friday 12 June 2009.

This workshop sought to improve the way in which bioavailability is considered and accounted for in micronutrient recommendations. A number of international experts examined bioavailability issues for several key micronutrients, being iron, calcium, folate, vitamin B12 and carotenoids. Additionally discussed was the setting of micronutrient recommendations, individual variability in relation to genotype, and bioavailability in relation to health claims for food products. Future research priorities were dentified. The proceedings of the workshop will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
