MISSION

The North American branch of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI North America) is a public, non-profit scientific foundation that advances the understanding and application of science related to the nutritional quality and safety of the food supply The organization caries out its mission by sponsoring research programs, professional and educational programs and workshops, seminars, and publications, as well as providing a neutral forum for government, academic, and industry scientists to discuss and resolve scientific issues of common concern for the well-being of the general public. ILSI North America's programs are supported primarily by its industry membership.

CODE OF ETHICS AND ORGANIZATIONAL STANDARDS

The scientific process requires open, transparent examination and honest interpretation of data.  ILSI North America is committed to such a process and requires that scientists who work with us disclose any potential conflicts of interest.  ILSI North America is committed to academic freedom and encourages publication of all research results, regardless of outcome.

Our commitment to transparency extends to ILSI North America-sponsored meetings and publications.  ILSI North America publications undergo stringent peer-review by qualified experts prior to publication.  Sources of funding for meetings and publications are disclosed.

Over the course of the past year, the Working Group on Guiding Principles has reviewed and developed language to reinforce the strength of the organization’s existing code of ethics and conflict of interest statements. Their work has resulted in the ILSI North America Policy on Conflict of Interest, approved in April 2008 by the ILSI North America Board of Trustees Executive Committee.

STAFF

Eric Hentges, PhD, joined ILSI North America in Summer 2007.  As Executive Director, he is working with members, trustees, science advisors, and staff to extend the organization’s contribution to and impact within diverse scientific and health communities.  ehentges@ilsi.org

Sharon Weiss, Deputy Executive Director, oversees the activities of the Food, Nutrition & Safety Program and is responsible for the Annual Meeting.  Sharon also works closely with the Board of Trustees and manages ILSI North America’s finances. sweiss@ilsi.org

Darinka “Daka” Djordjevic, PhD, joined the group in January 2008. Daka is currently managing committees on caffeine, food and chemical safety, food microbiology, and food packaging.  ddjordjevic@ilsi.org

Jackie Heppes, Executive Assistant, joined the organization in August 2009. She supports the Executive Director, the Board of Trustees, membership invoicing, communications, and selected technical projects. jheppes@ilsi.org

Courtney Kelly, Executive Assistant, joined the organization in 2007. She supports Sharon Weiss and Marie Latulippes and works closely with the Food, Nutrition and Safety Program, Future Leaders Award Program, and the nutrition-related technical committees. ckelly@ilsi.org  

Marie Latulippe, MS, RD, Scientific Program Manager, joined ILSI North America in 2006.  Marie’s strong nutrition background is a valuable asset to the organization.  She currently manages ILSI North America’s committees on carbohydrates, dietary lipids, early nutrition, and flavonoids. mlatulippe@ilsi.org

Pauline Rosen, Scientific Program Assistant, has been with ILSI North America since 2001.  She currently supports Darinka Djordjevic and Heather Steele. prosen@ilsi.org 

Heather Hartland Steele, Senior Project Manager, first joined ILSI North America 15 years ago. She currently works part-time, managing the Hydration and Sodium Committees as well as ILSI North America's Conflict of Interest Initiative. hsteele@ilsi.org
