Fortification

LONG-TERM OBJECTIVE

The Committee on Fortification is interested in understanding the impact of various nutrient sources on population nutrient intakes and status.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

There is considerable debate regarding the balance of processed versus whole foods in a healthful diet. To inform this debate, ILSI North America has developed a comprehensive evaluation of the contributions of natural, fortified, enriched, and dietary supplement food sources to total nutrient intakes. These data will be an important scientific resource as future food fortification policy is deliberated and the benefits of processed and whole foods continue to be debated in the scientific, media, and consumer arenas.

Using this same database, the diet quality of supplement users was compared to nonusers. These data, which indicate that adult supplement users generally have better diets in terms of vitamin and mineral adequacy compared to nonusers, have been submitted to several peer-reviewed journals and are anticipated for publication in early 2012. A third paper is in development to examine these relationships in children and adolescents.
