Journal Article 2009
This article, published in the Journal of Nutrition (2009;139:1269S–1270S), highlights the discussion of the issues that were raised during a workshop sponsored by the North American branch of the International Life Sciences Institute  and the USDA Agricultural Research Service surrounding the consumption of fructose.

The effect of X-ray on Salmonella inactivation and sensory quality of almonds and walnuts as a function of water activity
Journal Article 2011
The overall goal of this study was to develop a set of process design principles for low-energy X-ray irradiation of tree nuts.

The Definition of Dietary Fiber - Discussions at the Ninth Vahouny Fiber Symposium - Building Scientific Agreement
Journal Article 2010
This article, published in Food and Nutrition Research (2010;54), discusses that the scientific community agrees on maintaining a worldwide consensus regarding the inclusion of non-digestible carbohydrates with ≥DP3 as dietary fiber and on a core, non-exhaustive list of beneficial physiological effects that dietary fibers have.

The confusing world of dietary sugars; definition, intakes, food sources and international dietary recommendations
Journal Article 2012
This review defines sugars, provides the sugar content of major food sources, summarizes health concerns about dietary sugars, and compiles dietary guidelines for sugars issued by various organizations.

Sweetness, Satiation, and Satiety
Journal Article 2012
Many studies have examined the various sensory, cognitive, postingestive, and postabsorptive factors that can potentially contribute to the inhibition of eating, with careful attention to study design, crucial for correct interpretation of the results. This review discusses the satiating power of foods and drinks containing nutritive and nonnutritive sweeteners.

Sweetness and Food Preference
Journal Article 2012
Throughout evolution, sweetness has had a role in human nutrition, helping to orient feeding behavior toward foods providing both energy and essential nutrients. However, their use has led to further concerns that dissociating sweetness from energy may disrupt the balance between taste response, appetite, and consumption patterns, especially during development.

Supplement on Behavior and Obesity Prevention

This article, published in Obesity Research (2003;11), evaluates how various dietary and physical activity factors relate to weight management. The author presents what is understood about the complex biological, social, environmental, and economic factors that contribute to obesity.

Sugars and Health: Is There an Issue?
Journal Article 2003
Current controversy over the impact of sugars in health prompted a workshop in which participants shared the latest nutritional science information on this topic. The outcomes were published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (2003;103:1058–1060).

Sensitivity to Change in Cognitive Performance and Mood Measures of Energy and Fatigue in Response to Morning Caffeine Alone or in Combination with Carbohydrate
Journal Article 2009
This double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subjects (N=17) experiment compared the sensitivity to change of the cognitive performance and mood measures of mental energy following consumption of either a moderate does of caffeine (200 mg), a small amount of carbohydrate (50 g white bread), or both. The findings are published in the International Journal of Neuroscience (2009;119:1239–1258).
