Sleep and Obesity
2006 Conference
The committee, the National Sleep Foundation, and the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine organized a cutting-edge program on sleep and obesity. Held during National Sleep Awareness Week®, the two-day program featured over 20 speakers and covered such topics such as:
- Neural pathways linking sleep and obesity
- Circadian control of sleep and energy balance
- Sleep, metabolism, and appetite
- Pediatric sleep and obesity
- Stress and immune function
- Sleep apnea and obesity
Over 250 people attended the very successful conference, which moderators announced had launched "a new discipline." The program was approved for Continuing Medical Education credits for physicians through the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine, and a summary publication of the conference appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (24/31 May 2006–Vol 295, No 20).
A publication intended for nutritionists stemming from this conference is being drafted for submission to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
