This review discusses the satiating power of foods and drinks containing nutritive and nonnutritive sweeteners.
 
Sweetness and Food Preference

Throughout evolution, sweetness has had a role in human nutrition, helping to orient feeding behavior toward foods providing both energy and essential nutrients. However, their use has led to further concerns that dissociating sweetness from energy may disrupt the balance between taste response, appetite, and consumption patterns, especially during development.

Long-term survival of heat-stressed Salmonella Tennessee, Salmonella Typhimurium DT104, and Enterococcus faecium was evaluated in four model peanut paste formulations with a combination of two water activity (aw) levels and two fat levels over 12 months at 20 ± 1°C.

Surrogate Species Selection for Assessing Potential Adverse Environmental Impacts of Genetically Engineered Plants on Non-Target Organisms

To help identify and address the challenges facing researchers studying the effects of genetically engineered insect-resistant crops on non-target organisms (NTOs), CERA hosted the conference "Surrogate Species Selection for Assessing Potential Adverse Environmental Impacts of Genetically Engineered Plants on Non-Target Organisms." The Conference was held in the Washington, DC office of the ILSI Research Foundation, June 26-28, 2012, and it brought together 37 government, university, and private industry scientists from around the world representing the fields of entomology, ecology, agronomy, chemistry, and ecotoxicology. Over the course of the three-day meeting, the participants reached consensus on selection criteria for surrogate species to be used in the testing of insect-resistant crops on NTOs. In developing these criteria, the participants focused on ensuring that NTO testing would be practicable, test results would be scientifically and statistically valid, and the data obtained would accurately predict any adverse impacts likely from the use of the crops. The proceedings of the Conference include the presentations, case studies, breakout and plenary discussions, and the points of consensus agreed to by the participants.

​Most regulatory authorities require that developers of genetically engineered insect-resistant (GEI R) crops evaluate the potential for these crops to have adverse impacts on valued non-target organisms (NTOs), i.e., organisms not intended to be controlled by the trait.
