ILSI Focal Point in China organized this working with Food and Argiculture Organizatio; World Health Organization; and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, China (China CDC). Support was provided by the US Department of Agriculture and Wyeth.
The workshop reviewed the application of risk analysis principles in food safety work in China to improve the local and regional knowledge and capability of risk assessment within relevant government sectors.
The three-day workshop included one day of symposia and two days of training in microbial and chemical risk assessment, with training being conducted by experts from FAO, WHO, Food Standards Australia New Zealand, and China CDC.
About 200 participants from various government sectors, academia and industry attended the symposia and about 70 health professionals participated in the training program.
This is the first time that China had this type of comprehensive workshop on risk assessment in the food safety field. Participants and trainees praised the quality of the presentations and the active interaction between trainers and trainees. The workshop provided solid, updated knowledge on risk assessment which will greatly facilitate the implementation of new food safety laws in China (to be promulgated in early 2009) in which risk assessment is highlighted.
