IV SYMPOSIUM: Functional Foods in the Development and Cognitive Maintenance and in Intestinal Health
Bogotá, Colombia 8/10/2011 - 8/11/2011
Registration deadline: Tuesday, 2 August 2011

ILSI North-Andean has organized this symposium to create an opportunity to review and discuss the progress in our understanding of the benefits of functional foods.

Global trends offer a wide variety of foods, either processed or not. They also offer the possibility of improving the welfare of the community through the nutrients they contain. Since food is one of conditions which aims to protect people against risk factors related to health and quality of life, plans and actions that are offered to the community should aim at ensuring the improvement of public health.

A brief review of the availability of bioactive food components that provide benefits will be taken into account in the IV Symposium.

This will mainly focus on probiotics and prebiotics, and the omega fatty acids.

This symposium is the fourth in the series of events organized by ILSI North-Andean on functional foods since 1998 with the theme "An opportunity for public health in the 21st century; in 2005 "Bioactive components and international legislation"; and in 2007 "Carbohydrates, prebiotics and probiotics in the development of functional foods."

Through this space, which will gather representatives from industry, government and academia, is expected to achieve greater clarity in the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention with information based on scientific evidence.

The event is addressed to professionals in the fields of health science and food technology, also to regulators of government agencies related to the issue of safety and quality of functional foods.

It will include the participation of international speakers as Dr. Stephen Vidry, Dr. Bernadette Klotz, Franco M. Lajolo, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Martin Gottelad.
