The rising obesity incidence and related disease conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cancer, are sending warning alarms about how best to curb risk, or at a minimum break the links between obesity and ill-health. Fundamental to this call-to-arms is how to measure the significance of multiple, and sometimes subtle, bioenergetic changes and to develop appropriate strategies for their manipulation.

About the Speaker JOHN MILNER is the Chief of the Nutritional Science Research Group in the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute (USA) which promotes research that deals with the physiological importance of dietary bioactive compounds as modifiers of cancer risk and tumor behavior. Much of his own current research focuses on the anticancer properties of garlic and associated allyl sulfur compounds. From 1989 to 2000, he was the Head of and Professor in the Department of Nutrition at Pennsylvania State University (USA), where he also served as Director of the Graduate Program in Nutrition. Dr Milner is currently a member of the Global Board of Trustees for International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) and a liaison to the International Food Information Council (IFIC), among others. Dr Milner has served in an advisory capacity in the Human Nutrition Board of Scientific Counselors of the US Department of Agriculture and the Dietary Guidelines Committee of the Joint US Department of Agriculture / Department of Health and Human Services. He has also served as president of the American Society for Nutrition. Dr Milner has published more than 200 book chapters, monographs and journal articles and he serves on the editorial boards for many journals. Dr Milner received his PhD in Nutrition from Cornell (USA).
