The recent escalating trend in overweight and obesity worldwide and its associated health risks to the affected population can be attributed to a complex combination of changing food availability, consumption habits, environment, genetic and socioeconomic factors. Energy imbalance due to excess caloric intake from food and reduced caloric expenditure through physical activities is the main underlying cause of undesirable weight gain. Research undertaken by health authorities, institutions and corporations has shown the benefit of physical activity on health. There is a need for effective strategies for behavior change through individual and community base programs to address barriers to obesity prevention.
