ILSI’s Latin American branches (ILSI Argentina, ILSI Brasil, ILSI Mexico, ILSI North Andean, and ILSI South Andean) have collaborated on a comprehensive nutrition and food safety program to be held in conjunction with the upcoming meeting of the Latin American Society of Nutrition (SLAN). The SLAN meeting is being hosted in Santiago, Chile on 15-19 November 2009. ILSI’s Latin American branches have organized two sessions that are part of the official SLAN program. A satellite conference that leverages the gathering of nutrition and health experts has been organized for 20 November.
SLAN works to provide solutions to the nutrition challenges facing Latin America by facilitating the exchange of knowledge among experts. Formally established in 1965, SLAN today confronts food and nutrition-health issues ranging from severe malnutrition to increasing rates of obesity and its co-morbidities. Their annual meeting is a premier event where thousands of researchers, health professionals, and policy makers from across Latin America share the latest science and discuss programs that provide real-world health solutions.

On 17 November, the ILSI Latin American branches have organized a session titled "A Proposal for DRI Harmonization in Latin America." This session will explore the need for and feasibility of harmonization of dietary guidance across the region.
19 November 2009
On 19 November, ILSI South Andean has organized a half-day session covering general nutrition and hydration and health. It will feature experts from ILSI South Andean, ILSI Argentina, ILSI Brasil, and ILSI Mexico. Speakers will present on subjects ranging from the importance of adequate hydration; the role of antioxidants in promoting health; food allergies; and the future availability of and quality of water, among others.
20 November 2009 Satellite Meeting
The 20 November satellite meeting will provide ILSI members, science advisors, and staff the opportunity to further plan collaborative activities that have impact throughout Latin America.
