An Expert Group assessed the relationship between lifestyle and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Lifestyle factors that probably increase the risk of type 2 diabetes are overweight and physical inactivity. Recent epidemiological evidence has shown that the risk of type 2 diabetes is also associated with diet composition, particularly with 1) low fiber intake, 2) a high trans fatty acid intake and a low ratio of unsaturated-to-saturated fat intake, and 3) absence or excess of alcohol consumption.
