ILSI SEA Region together with CSIRO of Australia held the 2nd International Conference on East-West Perspective on Functional Foods in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on November 5-7, 2007. Attended by over 240 participants, the conference discussed the current work on some traditional Asian foods and new technologies that offer both challenges and opportunities for functional foods. The conference also highlighted the current regulatory status of nutrition and health claims related to functional foods, countries experiences on the substantiation of claims, and strategies for effective communication to consumers. The conference concluded with recommendations to strengthen R&D efforts and harmonization of protocols and methodologies on functional foods within the region. The summary report was published in Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2008.
