Special Report on Symposium on Diet, Nutrition and Immunity
Journal Article 2009

ILSI SEA Region held a Symposium on Diet, Nutrition and Immunity in Singapore on April 16-17, 2008. The symposium reviewed the current scientific information on the development of the immune system particularly in infancy, as well as the role of diet, exercise and aging on immunocompetence, together with the molecular processes involved. The symposium also discussed the importance of specific nutrients such as zinc and iron, vitamins D and E and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids on enhancing immunity, as well as the significance of maintaining a healthy microbiota in the gut leading to the concept of pro- and pre-biotics. Presentations also highlighted the potential of common Asian foods such as soybeans, wolfberry, and mushroom in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory related diseases. The summary report was published in Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009.
