About Malaysia The federation of Malaysia comprises of Peninsula Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarah on the island of Borneo. Malaysia is a multicultural nation with population of 17.9 million people. Bahasa Melayu (Malay) is the national language but English is widely spoken. The ethnic groups also speak various languages and dialects. Its capital city, Kuala Lumpur is a robust city that is central to all major transportation networks. Traveling to Malaysia To enter Malaysia, visitors must have a national passport or other internationally recognized travel documents with a validity period of at least six months beyond the length of stay in Malaysia. All passports and travel documents must be endorsed for travelling in Malaysia. Most visitors do not require a visa to enter Malaysia if the period is less than 1 month and the purpose of the visit is business or social. However, visas are required at all times by nationals of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (PR), India, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Vietnam (Nationals of these countries, except Nigeria, may be granted visa relaxation on transiting Malaysia for under 72 hours if in possession of confirmed onward airline tickets to a third country before arriving). Ringgits are available in the denominations of RM 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1. Coins (sen) are available in the denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 sen. Paying directly with foreign currency is uncommon; it is recommended to exchange foreign currencies into Ringgit. Weather Malaysia has an equatorial climate with uniform temperatures throughout the year and heavy humidity. Temperatures range from 32°C during the day to 22°C at night. Rainfall is common throughout the year. Electricity & Water Malaysia runs off a 220V/ 50Hz system, with British 3-pin rectangular electrical socket. Tap water is safe to drink in main cities and major hotels, but it is advisable to boil all drinking water or drink bottled water. Transportation in Kuala Lumpur The transportation system of Kuala Lumpur is a cooperation of complex systems of infrastructure such as integrated rail network, metro systems, monorail, buses, etc. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is the country's largest airport. From KLIA, you may take the KLIA Airport Limo Taxis to the hotel by purchasing a pre-paid coupon at the designated counters right after exiting the baggage and custom clearance area. The cost of the taxi limo is approximately RM75.00-90.00 (about US$ 20-25) for the standard or premium car. Depending on traffic, KLIA is about 45 mins-1 hour ride to the city center and the hotel. You may also take the Airport Express train located at the lower level of the airport terminal to reach the Kuala Lumpur Sentral at the city center (approximately 27 mins). The one way fare is RM 35.00 (about US$ 10). First train departs at 5.00am and last train departs at 12.30am from KL Sentral and 1.00am from KLIA. You may then obtain a taxi to the hotel from there. It is advisable to use either of these 2 official transfer modes and avoid individual taxi operators touting at the terminal lobby.
