Scientific Program Strategy

Scientific Program Strategy

To maximize our impact on public health, ILSI SEA Region has identified the following strategies that will guide its current and future programs:
 1. Advance the understanding of scientific issues and support science-based decision-making.
 2. Foster scientific and regulatory harmonization in a diverse region.
 3. Translate science into solutions through community programs and capability development.

Integrity, independence and transparency are principles that guide ILSI SEA Region’s scientific programs. By maintaining our neutrality, we have worked closely and effectively with our key stakeholder groups from academia, industry, health organizations and regulatory agencies. ILSI SEA Region addresses the concerns of these stakeholders by supporting credible scientific research and publications, facilitating the sharing and exchange of scientific output, and providing expertise and balanced perspectives for the development of regulations.

Structure of Scientific Program

Science Clusters

ILSI SEA Region’s scientific program is organized according to 4 Science Clusters:
  • Food and Nutrients in Health and Disease
  • Food and Water Safety
  • Food Innovations
  • Self-care and Health

As Consumer Science has been identified as one common issue of increasing importance and relevance to all of ILSI SEA Region’s scientific undertakings, it will be addressed by all the 4 Science Clusters through collaborative activities.

Flagship Programs

Each of ILSI SEA Region’s Science Clusters covers a wide range of scientific issues and public health challenges. To maximize our impact, and strengthen our leadership role in strategic and/or emerging areas, ILSI SEA Region has identified a Flagship Program under each of its Science Clusters.

The Flagship Programs have been established to meet the priorities of our stakeholders, as identified through the Science Clusters Survey conducted in 2009. Each Flagship Program will have a 2-year framework of objectives, outputs and outcomes, and these will be subject to monitoring as well as evaluation at the end of the 2 years.

While some of the Flagship Programs are new initiatives that we will be embarking on, others are current long-term programs that continue to be important to ILSI SEA Region’s scientific strategies.

Task Forces

In addition to the Flagship Programs, Task Forces within each Science Cluster plan and carry out specific activities relevant to the scope of the particular Science Cluster. This structure provides focus to ILSI SEA Region’s work, and facilitates greater synergy and interaction among Task Forces that address related topics.

It is envisioned that specific Task Force activities within a Science Cluster may change as issues emerge or are resolved. In this manner, a dynamic framework is created and organized to respond in a timely manner to changing health issues.

The Science Clusters, Flagship Programs and Task Forces are funded by contributions from member companies, as well as support grants from institutions and foundations.

ILSI SEA Region’s Regional Office works closely with our Country Office and Country Committees to coordinate and implement our scientific activities, ensuring that the objectives of each Science Cluster are achieved.
