Mission
ILSI is a nonprofit, worldwide organization whose mission is to improve public health and well-being by engaging academic, government and industry scientists in a neutral forum to advance scientific understanding in the areas related to nutrition, food safety, risk assessment, and the environment. ILSI receives its funding from its industry members, governments, and foundations.
Concept
ILSI was incorporated in 1978 to improve anticipation and response to scientific uncertainty. It was envisioned as an international body; one that would foster collaboration among industries and regulatory agencies to help ensure the safety and well-being of the public. Prominent researchers from industry and academia were to jointly lead the organization, guiding its work to generate data, harmonize the use of science, and encourage scientific dialogue.
Over 30 years later, ILSI is still delivering on this promise.
ILSI South Africa
ILSI South Africa is one of ILSI's newer branches, formally established in 1998 with a mission to:
contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of all South Africans through improved public health and safety.
Emphasis is placed on nutrition, food safety, and environmental issues; particularly water. In 2008, ILSI South Africa celebrated its 10th anniversery at the same time ILSI recognized its 30th year.
ILSI South Africa Organization
ILSI South Africa's organization reflects ILSI's value of public-private partnerships. Its leadership includes the ILSI South Africa president (elected from academia); a chairman (elected from member companies); a secretary (elected from academia); and a vice-chairman/treasurer (elected from member companies). Eight individuals representing academia or government and six individuals from ILSI South Africa's industry membership from its Board of Trustees.
