Global Network

The initial steps for establishing ILSI and its ultimate incorporation over 30 years ago were made in the United States. From inception, however, ILSI's outlook has been international.  While ILSI always recognized that health and science are borderless concepts it also realizes that decision are often made locally or regionally.  ILSI's network is consciously designed sot that science - no matter where it is generated - can be applied in national or regional context.

ILSI South Africa is an important part of the ILSI global network.  While its current activities are focused on South Africa, it provides the ILSI organization with the potential to improve human health and safety throughout the southern African region.

In line with ILSI's strategic plan, ILSI South Africa is providing for greater cooperation among ILSI entities, maximizing impact with limited human and financial resources.  The branch has developed strong working relationships with ILSI Europe in particular, creating programs that recognize the often global nature of local health concerns.
ILSI South Africa, an important part of the ILSI international network, fosters cooperation on programs that recognize the often global nature of local health concerns.

ILSI South Africa collaborates with many organizations, including the Government Department of Health; the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa; the South African Association for Food Service and Technology; the Medical Research Council; AfricaBio (a nonprofit, nonpolitical biotechnology stakeholder association); and of course university nutrition, food science, and technology departments throughout the country.

In addition to ILSI South Africa, 13 regional, or country specific branches; the ILSI Research Foundation; ILSI Health and Environmental Sciences Institute; the ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee; and the International Organizations Committee work together to provide a flexible mechanism for identifying emerging issues, fostering a harmonized use of science in the decision-making process, and building scientific capacity at the local level.
