21 - 23 April 2010
Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital
Johannesburg, South Africa
A strong team of foremost academics in this field from six countries around the world, including South Africa, will present the latest science and debate some of the most challenging current issues on this theme.
We look forward to welcoming you to participate in what we believe will be a memorable and valuable conference for sport in South Africa.
Background
In 1991, a landmark consensus conference on Nutrition in Sport was organised by the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee. A key conclusion of the conference was that “Diet significantly influences athletic performance”. That is a clear and unequivocal statement: What you eat before, during and after training and competition will affect performance. Since then, this message has been reinforced many times but the picture continues to evolve as new information becomes available. This Conference will bring together a panel of experts from around the world to review the latest information and to discuss with the audience the nutrient needs of athletes and the eating and drinking strategies that they can adopt to allow them to train and compete to the limit of their potential.
Purpose The purpose is to bring together all those in sport, academia, industry and government interested in improving their knowledge in respect of important food and hydration factors that impinge on sport performance and the long term health of sports men and women. The presentations are of relevance to those in engaged in sports coaching, nutrition, sports science, sports medicine, food manufacture and food supplements, food regulation, sports administration, sports policy, research and not least those playing sport.
